Fairlop Waters remains closed while police investigate what happened to the teenager (Credit: John Davies)
Officers were told the teenager had willingly entered the water to swim but did not return to the shore at around 12.30am on Monday, 4 July.
The National Police Air Service, London Fire Brigade and the Marine Policing Unit carried out an initial search for him.
Specialist divers were then called in to help search the lake.
The boy’s body was recovered from the water on Monday evening. His family are being supported by specialist officers.
Police say they are treating the death as “unexpected” and that Fairlop Waters will remain closed to the public while they carry out their enquiries.
